Top 3 Moments from the Weekend – Rugby World Cup

The Rugby World Cup Starts off with a Bang

The Rugby World Cup kicked off on Friday night and the opening weekend of the biggest rugby event in the world did not disappoint. We saw upsets for the ages, fantastic tries, brutal tackles and some fantastic rugby. The 2015 tournament has already become a contest that will be remembered for years to come, here are our top 3 reasons why.

1. Japan the Giant Slayers

The rugby world was in shock after the result no one expected finally sunk in. The thought didn’t cross a neutrals fan mind and certainly not the minds of the sluggish looking Springboks.

It didn’t cross the mind of the South Africa fan that cycled 40,000km to see the game  or the IGN reviewer for the RWC15 video game who complained that the match simulator was terrible and gave the fact that Japan beat South Africa in the group stages as an example of the poor simulation.

Coach, Eddie Jones, has promised this isn’t a flash in the pan for the Japanese side but time well tell if they can replicate this performance through the duration of the group stages.

Nevertheless, Japan beat one of the greatest rugby nations in the world and this match alone has made this Rugby World Cup relevant and promises exciting things from the host nation of RWC2019.

2. Nadolo and Brown are set loose for Rugby World Cup Opener

England did enough to secure their bonus match point against a tough Fiji side but only really came alive in the last 10 minutes. With 27 minutes to go there was only 6 points between the teams.

However, two players shined throughout the game. The crusaders giant, Nadolo, made an enormous impact on the world stage with tries, penalties, some great ball carrying and insane catching.

On the England side, Mike Brown played out of skin defensively and to get over the try line. We can’t wait to see how a more settled England side do against rivals Wales this weekend.

3. Georgia overcome Tonga

Another surprising result that got largely overshadowed by the Japan v South Africa result, Georgia beating Tonga was another great result for the underdogs. Ranked 5 places over Georgia in the World Rankings Tonga were strong favourites to win the game. The recent European Nations Cup winners however had other plans.
